4th EDOARDO AMALDI CONFERENCE ON GRAVITATIONAL WAVES
Amaldi4 July 8 - 13, 2001
|
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT THE WORLD CONFERENCE ON GRAVITATIONAL WAVES
Public Lectures Presented by:
The University of Western Australia
&
The Gravity Discovery Centre Foundation
Everyone is interested in the big question about the Universe. Gravitational wave researchers are in the forefront of the scientific quest to answer some of these big questions: the birth of the universe, the nature of black holes, the nature of space and time itself.
On July 8th the world’s gravitational wave community will be converging
on Perth for their biannual conference. While the physicists will
be discussing topics ranging from black holes and solutions of Einstein’s
equations, to the performance of high power lasers, the conference will
be bringing this exciting frontier of physics to the layman through 3 free
public lectures
* A FREE SPECIAL SCHOOL’S and PUBLIC LECTURE WILL BE HELD AT:
The Ross Lecture Theatre, Physics Department, The University of
Western Australia on:
Thursday 5th July 2001 at 12 noon
"Gravitational Waves: A New Window on the Universe"
David Coward & Professor David Blair
Designed for students in years 10-12 and others interested in science. This lecture will feature live demonstrations, dramatic images and computer simulations.
Only 200 places available: to reserve space contact UWA Physics,

* A PAIR OF FREE EVENING PUBLIC LECTURES WILL
BE HELD AT:
The Octagon Theatre, The University of Western Australia on:
Monday 9th July 2001 at 8.00 pm
No booking is required.
The first:
"Pulsars: Nature’s Timekeepers"
Dr. R.N. Manchester
Dr. Manchester, from the Australia Telescope National Facility, is the
world’s leading discoverer of pulsars: the extraordinary remnants
of exploding stars where time slows down and a pinhead weighs a million
tonnes. He will report on his latest exciting discoveries.
The second:
"Joseph Weber -A Man With a Mission"
Professor W.O. Hamilton
Professor Hamilton, (a leading gravity wave physicist from the USA),
will tell the amazing story of the ex-naval Commander Joseph Weber.
It is a story of the vision and dedication of an extraordinary physicist,
who first realised the possibility of lasers and who singlehandedly pioneered
the basic concept of gravitational wave detectors when it was thought by
most to be an impossible dream.
*(The 4th Edoardo Amaldi Conference on Gravitational Waves, is named
after the Italian physicist who started the world’s premiere Physics Research
Centre, CERN in Geneva and who was amongst the first physicists to realise
the significance of gravitational waves).
