4th EDOARDO AMALDI CONFERENCE

ON GRAVITATIONAL WAVES

Amaldi4

July 8 - 13, 2001
The University of Western Australia

Perth, Australia

OVERVIEW

The Edoardo Amaldi Conference on Gravitational Waves has been held three times before:  in Frascati, Italy (1994), at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland (1997) and at Caltech, Pasadena, USA, (1999).  The 4th Edoardo Amaldi Conference on Gravitational Waves (Amaldi 4) has taken on a new significance as it is now the main meeting for the Gravitational Wave Detection Community (GWIC).

Amaldi 4  will be held at The University of Western Australia, Perth, from July 8 - 14, 2001.  It is hoped that this large international forum will attract key people from a variety of relevant disciplines.   A free public lecture will be given by Dr. R.N. Manchester at the Octagon Theatre on campus during the conference.  Young scientists are encouraged to participate and a subsidy of some or all of their travel expenses and a reduced registration fee is being offered.

Amaldi 4 will be held in conjunction with the 3rd Australasian Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation (ACGRG3).  Amaldi 4 has been scheduled to allow participants to attend the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation 16th International Conference (GR16) in Durban, South Africa from 15 - 21 July.  Participants on round the world tickets can therefore attend both conferences at no extra travel cost.

The emphasis of the conference is on gravitational wave detection, sources and data analysis. The preliminary program is presently being drawn up and includes:

Sunday 8 July 2001     :     Registration and Welcome Reception
Mon-Fri 9-13 July       :     Scientific Program
Thursday 12 July         :     Conference Excursion after morning tea followed in the evening by a farewell BBQ.

The Amaldi 4 program sessions will include: overviews of the status of astrophysical gravitational wave sources, interferometry and bar antennae followed by sessions on: the sources of gravitational waves, interferometry in considerable detail, a series of overview talks on advanced concepts in suspensions, thermal and non-thermal noise, interferometer configurations, lasers and optics, quantum non-demolition, advanced configurations, space interferometry, bar antennae, signal processing and data analysis including the stochastic background, data analysis for resonant detectors and various issues in relation to gravity wave data analysis, suspensions and thermal noise.

A public lecture will be held on the Monday evening and a poster, pizza and brief 'sparkler' talks session is scheduled for the Tuesday evening.

Some of the conference will overlap the 3rd Australasian Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation (ACGRG3) which will attract scientists from around Australia and will have a greater emphasis on theory.  Click here to go to the ACGRG3 web page for further information.

CONFERENCE FACILITIES

The main conference will be held in the Octagon Theatre.  During the conference excursion the conference delegates will be shown the research facilities of the first stage of the Australian International Gravitational Observatory at Gingin.  The ACGRG3 will be held in the Ross Lecture Theatre in the Physics Department, UWA.
